Bush’s Supreme Pick

July 20, 2005

So far John G. Roberts seems to appear as a pretty good pick by president Bush, but we don’t yet know much about his record.  We know the standard issue in Washington will be the litmus test the Democrats will put on Mr. Roberts about abortion.  But, there are some other pressing issues that Conservatives should not overlook in his testimony before the Judiciary.  For instance, a good question to start; How do you feel about the U.S. Patriot Act? Do enemy combatants have the right to due process or can the U.S. Military hold foreign terrorists? Would you limit the Patriot Act? Why? Why Not? Everyone says you are strict constructionist, in your mind how would define a strict constructionist? Will you look to foreign precedent for your decision making process? Why? Why Not? How do you view States Rights etc.? We know the nomination process is going to turn into a bloody mess, because Democrats are so hysterical about the abortion issue.  Some Democrats have already started making some distributing comments about the nomination process. For instance, Senator Dick Durbin has said:

The president had an opportunity to unite the country with his Supreme Court nomination, to nominate an individual in the image of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Instead, by putting forward John Roberts' name, President Bush has chosen a more controversial nominee and guaranteed a more controversial confirmation process.

Story Continues Below

This is not the way to start off the hearings, but Mr. Durbin and other Democrats can’t help themselves in tearing Judge Roberts down.  The reason for this hysteria by Democrats is their Left Wing base will be pushing them to Filibuster Judge Roberts. MoveOn.org has started running ads about Judge Roberts—and ‘Naral’ is going berserk over the Nomination of Judge Roberts. It’s all about Roe v. Wade in the end, and if Mr. Roberts gives any indication he will overturn Roe v. Wade the Liberals will come un-hinged.

Judge Roberts seems like a fair man, but Conservatives should ask tough questions of Judge Roberts, especially his views on the war on terror.  We are in the middle of a war on terror and the Supreme Court could play a critical role in this war. This war could last for generations and Judge Roberts could be on the court for many years. We hope and pray that Judge Roberts understand his role as Supreme Court Justice, but only time will tell.  A good start would be to learn from Justice Aton Scalia and Clarence Thomas.

The London Bombing

July 8, 2005

London has been a great friend to the United States and America should and will return the favor for being such a staunch ally after 9/11. We hope London will not bow down to the terrorists, which some Europeans have been prone to do. For example, Mr. Galloway, who was expelled from the Labour party for his despicable comments about the Iraq war, has said:

The West was in danger of making the same mistakes over and over again, continuing with "war and occupation as the principal instrument of our foreign and defense policy".
He went on to say "And if we do then some people will get through and hurt us as they have hurt us today."

We hope this type of rhetoric and pacifism is not going to take hold in London and other European Nations. Now is not the time to retreat from the war on terror…London did not get bombed because they are in Iraq, the got bombed because of radical Islam extremist. These radicals hate freedom, hate Democracy, and they want to destroy our civilizations. They must be faced down with swift justice and tough-minded societies. The war on terror will probably last for generations, but what is the alternative; sit and let the terrorists take over our way of life? Establishing a democracy in Iraq is good place to start…but more needs to be done. In fact, some in the United States are trying to weaken the 'Patriot Act' in the middle of the war on terror. This would be a horrible mistake and the American people should not tolerate it. Great Britain should think about adopting something similar to the Patriot Act in the future. But, retreat by our societies is not an option, and especially after this horrible bombing in London. Osama bin Laden and his crew are watching how London will react to the bombing on 7/7, and they are hoping for a pullout of Iraq, similar to the one the Spanish did after their horrific bombing in Madrid. But London is a different society than Spain…they will not yield to the barbarians and they will be a better society for it.

London and Tony Blair, find the people who perpetrated this injustice on 7/7, and bring them to justice-don't let al qaeda change your way of life, and certainly don't bow down to these religious fanatics. Great Britain has a great tradition of standing firm in the wake of disaster, and we Americans bet this time won't be any different. America stands with you during this time of tragedy and we respect what you have done for us. You are a great friend and you have stood by our side and we will stand by yours.

We found this poem about perseverance and thought it might be a nice tribute to all those who were killed and injured in yesterday's bombing:

Carry On! (By Robert Service)

It's easy to fight when everything's right,
And you're mad with the thrill and the glory;
It's easy to cheer when victory's near,
And wallow in fields that are gory.
It's a different song when everything's wrong,
When you're feeling infernally mortal;
When it's ten against one, and hope there is none,
Buck up, little soldier, and chortle:
Carry on! Carry on!
There isn't much punch in your blow.
You're glaring and staring and hitting out blind;
You're muddy and bloody, but never you mind.
Carry on, my son! Carry on!

And so in the strife of the battle of life
It's easy to fight when you're winning;
It's easy to slave, and starve and be brave,
When the dawn of success is beginning.
But the man who can meet despair and defeat
With a cheer, there's the man of God's choosing;
The man who can fight to Heaven's own height
Is the man who can fight when he's losing.
Carry on! Carry on!
Things never were looming so black.
But show that you haven't a cowardly streak,
And though you're unlucky you never are weak.
Carry on! Carry on!
Brace up for another attack.
It's looking like hell, but-you never can tell:
Carry on, old man! Carry on!

There are some who drift out in the deserts of doubt,
And some who in brutishness wallow;
There are others, I know, who in piety go
Because of a Heaven to follow.
But to labor with zest, and to give your best,
For the sweetness and joy of the giving;
To help folks along with a hand and song;
Why, there's the real sunshine of living

Carry on! Carry on!
Fight the good fight and true;
Believe in your mission, greet life with a cheer;
There's big work to do, and that's why you are here.
Carry on! Carry on!
Let the world be the better for you;
And at last when you die, let this be your cry:

Carry on, my soul! Carry on!

Fred Thompson is the Right Choice

July 6, 2005

George W. Bush picked Fred Thompson to assist in finding an appropriate Supreme Court Nominee for Justice O’Connor’s resignation. Fred Thompson has enormous respect and admiration from both sides of the aisle—which should help him to bring some civility to the process. Mr. Thompson understands how the Senate works and he will need every bit of that experience to get him through the pending fight coming up for the Supreme Court nomination process. Mr. Thompson brings a sense of maturity and toughness that should serve him well while trying to find someone to fill the court’s empty seat.  Former Senator Fred Thompson has an impressive bio; see below:

Senator from Tennessee; born in Sheffield, Ala., on August 19, 1942; attended the public schools in Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; graduated from Memphis State University 1964; received J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University 1967; admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1967 and commenced the practice of law; assistant U.S. attorney 1969-1972; minority counsel, Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities (“Watergate Committee”) 1973-1974; special counsel to Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander 1980; special counsel, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations 1980-1981; special counsel, Senate Intelligence Committee 1982; member, Tennessee Appellate Court Nominating Commission 1985-1987; actor; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in the November 8, 1994, special election to fill the unexpired portion of the term ending January 3, 1997, left vacant by the resignation of Albert Gore, Jr.; took the oath of office on December 2, 1994; reelected in 1996 for the term ending January 3, 2003; not a candidate for reelection in 2002; chair, Committee on Governmental Affairs (One Hundred Fifth and One Hundred Sixth Congresses; One Hundred Seventh Congress [January 20, 2001-June 6, 2001]); resumed acting career.

His main focus will be to shepherd the nominee through the nomination process. George W. Bush is currently sifting through potential nominees while attending the G8 summit in Scotland.  Bush is expected to decide on the vacancy after returning from his trip. Fred Thompson is the right choice for George W. Bush and he will do a tremendous job.

Why the Democrats want to control the Supreme Court

July 5, 2005

The Democratic Party is about to come unhinged in the up coming Supreme Court Nomination process.  The courts are where the Democratic Party derives all of their power, and since the Party is having trouble winning elections they must keep the balance of power in their court.  At issue for the Democrats is Roe v. Wade, and making sure any Supreme Court Nominee Bush picks will uphold that decision.  Make no mistake about it; Rove v. Wade is where the real fighting will take place during the nomination process.  Moreover, if Bush picks someone who is Pro-Life there will be a battle like none ever seen in the history of nominations. Judge Bork’s hearing will pail in comparison—back when Judge Bork was nominated there was no 24-hour news outlets and political blogging wasn’t even a word.  The groups on the Left and Right have already started gearing up for the nomination hearings and Bush hasn’t even picked a nominee yet.  In fact, some on the Right have already started attacking Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, because he is Pro-Choice.

George W. Bush won the election and he should pick who he thinks will best represent his views…he has always said the Anton Scalia and Clarence Thomas are judges he respects and admires.  In other words, Bush wants a ‘Strict Constructionist’ on the Supreme Court.  Bush does not want an activist judge who makes the laws up (e.g. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Pledge of Allegiance) as he or she rules on important matters. So the battle lines are drawn…the Liberals want an Activist Judge and the President wants a Strict Constructionist nominated to the Supreme Court.

The Liberal Senator from Massachusetts Ted Kennedy has already sent out a pre-emptive strike against President Bush in statements he made after Justice Sandra Day O’Connor resigned. Here is a direct quote from Ted Kennedy:

“If the president abuses his power and nominates someone who threatens to roll-back the rights and freedoms of the American people, then the American people will insist that we oppose that nominee, and we intend to do that.”

Mr. Kennedy is not the President of the United States of America, but he continues to think he is the one picking the nominee for the Supreme Court—in fact, he is coming close to stepping on presidential powers laid out in the constitution.  The Democrats need to get over the fact that they lost the election and the president has certain rights when he wins election or re-election.  Mr. Bush can pick whom he wants to and Liberals and Democrats should respect his authority to do so. This same old rhetoric from the Left is getting tiresome and the America people are getting tired of the so called 'do-gooders' always pushing their out of the mainstream agenda on the rest of us.  When the Democrats win a presidential election they will get to pick judges…but until that day they should stop whining.  In fact, the Left better get their act together if they want to start winning national elections because they are on their way to losing one of the last bastions of Liberalism (The Courts). This Editorial page does not see the Democrats having any luck in the near future when it comes to elections--especially presidential elections. The Democrats are wrong on the 'War on Terror' and they are wrong on Roe v. Wade--but that won't stop them from making fools of themselves during the Supreme Court Hearings.  Joe Biden, Ted Kennedy and the rest of the gang of Liberals in the Senate can't wait to get their faces on C-SPAN, so they can tear into Bush's nominee, but they should remember, the American people will be watching.

Support our Troops During the 4th of July Holiday

June 30, 2005

Families are taking off for their 4 of July Holiday and soon will be spending time with their families. This is what American does…and it's a great tradition to celebrate our Independence. During this Holiday let's remember the troops over in Iraq and Afghanistan, and what they are sacrificing on a daily basis. The troops deserve our recognition during this holiday weekend. They are remarkable human beings and they have made great sacrifices in their personal and professional lives. Below are some Web Sites where we can support our troops:

There are many more charities and support Web Sites at American Supports You

Below is a poem that we believe represents the great men and women of our Armed Services:

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Not gold, but only man can make
A people great and strong;
Men who, for truth and honor's sake,
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly-
They build a nation's pillars deep
And lift them to the sky

So, remember when you are enjoying time with your family this Holiday--the United States Military is working while we sleep, and deserve to be thanked and supported for their sacrifices by the American people. Their sacrifices will not go overlooked by this page. They are the true heroes of our time!!!

The President’s Speech

June 29, 2005

Last night the President of the Unites States gave a much-needed speech about Iraq and the War on Terrorism. The president stood firm in his resolve to finish the job, and to make sure America is safe after 9/11.  The troops seemed to support their Commander-in-Chief, which is very important, because there is still a lot of work to be done there. One way of summarizing the speech is by a quote the president gave: “We will stand down when the Iraqi’s stand up. Moreover, when there are enough Iraqi troops trained we will begin the process of bringing our troops home.  The American people should know that there is still a lot of work to be done there but we are making a great deal of progress.  But the President has told us before there is a lot of work to be done in Iraq…for example in his ‘Mission Accomplished’ speech the President was honest about what was going on in Iraq—here is a direct quote from that speech on May 1, 2003:

We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We are bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous. We are helping to rebuild Iraq, where the dictator built palaces for himself, instead of hospitals and schools. And we will stand with the new leaders of Iraq as they establish a government of, by, and for the Iraqi people. The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done. And then we will leave — and we will leave behind a free Iraq.

George W. Bush has remained and continues to remain focused on getting the job done in Iraq and he should be saluted for that resolve and steadiness.  He took a lot of heat for the so-called ‘Mission Accomplished’ speech, but this criticism is unjust—Bush stated in the speech that major combat operations were over.  He didn’t say the battle was over, but we never hear that part of speech from the mainstream press.

The work in Iraq will be tough and hard, but we must stay the course in Iraq, and Afghanistan—there is no other option.  Half of the cut and run crowd voted for the war in Iraq, but all they do is arm-chair quarterback and it takes a toll on the American people and our troops.  If you have a beef with the President take up in private, but don’t run out to shows and/or the mainstream press and rip this just war every chance you get…it’s annoying and pathetic.
