A suicide bomber killed 15 Afghans and three foreign troops today at an air base where US Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting, the Afghan interior ministry said. The attack occurred at a security gate guarded by US troops at the heavily secured base about 60km north of Kabul. “Initial reports are stating that 18 people were killed and three of them are foreign soldiers,” interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said. “The 15 others are civilian Afghan workers who wanted to enter Bagram air base for their work. On injuries we do not have exact reports.”

Tony Blair defied an assassination threat from al-Qa’eda to take part in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in central London, it can be revealed for the first time. The risk to the Prime Minister was disclosed to a new BBC documentary by Lord Stevens, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner in 2002. He positioned marksmen around Buckingham Palace in readiness for an attack by bombers or snipers. Lord Stevens, talking for the first time about the alleged plot, said: “There was a threat against the Prime Minister over the Queen’s Jubilee period. It was an assassination threat. There was good reason to believe that the threat was credible.” Mr Blair had become a target after backing the overthrow of the Taliban in Afghanistan by the deployment of British air power and troops. He was also using his diplomatic influence to try to generate support for President George W Bush to invade Iraq.

Three Arab states in the Persian Gulf would be willing to allow the Israel Air force to enter their airspace in order to reach Iran in case of an attack on its nuclear facilities, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Siyasa reported on Sunday. According to the report, a diplomat from one of the gulf states visiting Washington on Saturday said the three states, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, have told the United States that they would not object to Israel using their airspace, despite their fear of an Iranian response. Al-Siyasa further reported that NATO leaders are urging Turkey to open its airspace for an Attack on Iran as well and to also open its airports and borders in case of a ground attack.

Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah is suffering from some form of depression, Israeli behavioral researchers said. The experts, who examined Nasrallah’s patterns of behavior during recent public appearances and compared it to his conduct in the past, said if their assertion was correct it would be difficult to predict the Hizbullah chief’s actions in the future. According to the researchers, Nasrallah’s current speeches and TV appearances lack the usual zeal and charisma. The researchers said Nasrallah’s depression may be the result of criticism directed at him from Lebanon and Syria.

Al Qaeda leaders and the jihadist movement in general always have taken a long view of the war, and discussion of a U.S. withdrawal from either Iraq or Afghanistan has long been anticipated. In planning the 9/11 attacks, al Qaeda leaders clearly expected that the United States, once drawn into a war, eventually would weaken and lose heart. A study of al Qaeda’s philosophy, mindset and planning — conveyed through the words and actions of its leadership — is a reminder of just how the current U.S. political debate fits into the jihadist timeline and strategy. It also is an indicator that a U.S. withdrawal from Muslim lands is not al Qaeda’s ultimate requirement for ending attacks against the United States or American interests abroad.
